HOW ROVELIE BEGAN
It started in a fitting room.
For twenty-five years, Vera dressed other people. Buying floors in Amsterdam, ateliers in Milan — she watched the industry sprint after whoever was twenty-two that season, every season, for decades.
Then one afternoon it was her turn in the mirror. Everything on the rail was sharp, edgy, loud — cut for a body she didn’t have and a life she didn’t live. “Every piece wanted me to be someone else,” she says. “Nothing wanted me to be comfortable being me.” She was fifty-one. She hung it all back, went home, and started sketching.
Rovelie is what she drew: clothes for the people big brands stopped seeing. Pieces that are comfortable and classy at the same time — natural fabrics, honest cuts, colours that calm rather than shout. Nothing to squeeze into. Nothing to perform in. Dressing well, without the stress.
The surprise came later: her daughters kept stealing the pieces. Because ease and elegance, it turns out, have no age. Today Rovelie is worn in Amsterdam and far beyond, by people in their twenties and in their seventies — one small, edited wardrobe, fairly priced, made for real days. Fewer, better. Unhurried.
